From April 16-18, 2025, the Michigan Poverty Law Program hosted the Committee on Regional Training’s Consumer Law training in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The training brought together 63 legal aid attorneys from four states—Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia—to learn how to protect low-income consumers from predatory and unfair practices.

The training featured national experts from the National Consumer Law Center, Notre Dame Law School, and AARP Foundation, as well as presentations from leading attorneys in private practice. Advocates left the training better equipped to:

  • Prevent unnecessary foreclosures and help borrowers obtain loan modifications and payment plans
  • Preserve intergenerational wealth, especially in communities of color, by preventing reverse mortgage foreclosures and addressing heirs property issues
  • Combat unfair and deceptive auto sales practices, and
  • Fight for consumers subject to illegal and unjust debt collection practices.
