Mike Head Named Director of the DCH Office of Long Term Care Supports and
Services

After months of delay, Michigan Department of Community Health Director Janet Olszewski has named Michael J. Head as the Director of the new Office of Long Term Care Supports and Services. Head has more than 30 years experience in the mental health and human services fields and has particular expertise in Medicaid and federal waiver programs. Since 2003, Mike has led the MDCH Office of Consumer-Directed Home and Community-Based Services. This office has serves as the Department's Olmstead coordinator and manages several federal grants which support critical programs to reform Michigan's long term care system.

The Office of Long Term Care Supports and Services has responsibility for coordinating statewide planning for long term care and for administering activities necessary to implement recommendations made by the Medicaid Long Term Care Task Force in its June 2005 final report. It was created by an Executive Order issued at the time the report was released and has drawn its staff from other offices at MDCH. The permanent director for the office will report directly to Ms. Olszewski.

Because of the perceived importance of this position and the Department's commitment to inclusiveness, numerous stakeholders from the advocacy and provider committee served, along with state officials, on the interview committee for the position. Advocates hope to have fairly frequent and informal access to the new director.
