ICAN!-EIC Tops $1 Million in Returns

by Steve Gray, MPLP Technology Outreach Attorney

Thanks largely to your efforts (poverty law programs) and those of Michigan credit unions and Michigan Works! agencies income tax returns generated to Michigan residents through the ICAN!-EIC online tax preparation program have topped $1 million. As of this writing (February 20, 2006) and only a little over a month into the tax season ICAN!-EIC refunds to Michigan residents total $1,007,996!

I-CAN!-EIC is web-based software developed by the Legal Aid Society of Orange County that allows low-income workers to electronically file their income taxes and apply for the EITC online at no charge. It is written at a 5th grade literacy level and is available in English and Spanish. And new this year, thanks to a grant from the Michigan Credit Union League, I-CAN!-EIC also allows low-income Michiganders to file their Michigan state tax returns and claim the Michigan Home Heating and Homestead Property Tax (renters only) credits.
