MPLP Welcomes Susan E. Reed

Susan is a graduate of Marquette University and the University of Minnesota Law School. In 2003, Susan joined Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) at Farmworker Legal Services and spent three years there representing migrant and seasonal farmworkers in immigration, immigrant rights, and employment law matters.
Susan then served as a regional attorney with Justice for Our Neighbors, the immigration legal services program of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (JFON/UMCOR). At JFON/UMCOR, Susan represented immigrants in all types of family-based and humanitarian immigration matters, including removal proceedings and appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals and federal courts.
In her new role at MPLP, Susan will lead the Michigan Immigrant Rights Project (MIRP), a joint project of LSSCM and the Center for Civil Justice, made possible by grants from the Michigan State Bar Foundation, the Arcus Foundation, and a U.S. Department of Justice Legal Assistance to Victims grant.
MIRP will focus on the following objectives: technical and co-counsel assistance and training to Michigan legal aid and pro bono attorneys handling immigration and immigrant rights matters; systemic advocacy on behalf of Michigan's low-income immigrants and their families; legislative and legal development tracking and analysis; coalition-building among immigration assistance providers and immigrant advocacy organizations statewide; and support and training for domestic violence survivor attorneys and advocates regarding the rights of battered immigrants.
Susan's office will be at Farmworker Legal Services, P.O. Box 209, Bangor, MI 49013-0219, tel. (269) 427-1622 x 235, email: susanree@umich.edu
