Farmworker Legal Services (FLS) is seeking a bilingual Workers’ Rights Outreach Advocate/Paralegal to join its farmworker and immigrant rights advocacy team. FLS is committed to ensuring immigrant, migrant, and seasonal farmworkers’ equal access to economic and legal justice by providing a range of free civil legal services to farmworkers. Services  include impact litigation in cases involving trafficking, wage theft, discrimination, sexual harassment, workplace health and safety violations, unsafe housing conditions, civil rights abuses, and immigration. FLS, in partnership with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC), offers technical assistance, referrals, and intake services to farmworkers through the statewide Farmworker Law Hotline and works closely with the Immigrant Worker division of MIRC. FLS is a statewide division of the Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP), which provides access to the justice system for those who need it most.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Paralegal will work with immigrant, migrant, and seasonal farmworkers to ensure immigrant, migrant, and seasonal farmworkers have  access to the justice system. The Paralegal will have direct communication with clients, provide case management and litigation support to a team of workers’ rights attorneys litigating in Michigan state and federal courts, and conduct bilingual know-your-rights presentations to farmworkers and service providers.  The Paralegal will plan and conduct targeted outreach to migrant agricultural camps in Michigan and participate in local task forces with a focus on farmworker  and immigrant rights advocacy. The Paralegal’s responsibilities will include conducting initial legal screenings and intake triage for follow-up services,  assisting attorneys in case development and filing administrative complaints and immigration applications, and supporting FLS on other substantive and administrative projects. Evening and occasional weekend hours will be necessary and extensive travel is required.  

QUALIFICATIONS:  Written and verbal fluency in Spanish and English are required. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree, certification of completion/graduation from an accredited paralegal program, or a minimum of two years relevant experience (e.g. working with farmworkers or immigrant workers or litigation support experience) is required. Candidates must be detail oriented, with strong organizational skills, and able to work flexible hours that will include evenings and weekends, especially during the harvest season. Candidates must be proficient with Microsoft Office and web-based Google applications. Experience with LexisNexis and/or Westlaw is preferred but not required. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice, especially in the areas of worker or immigrant rights.

BENEFITS:   This is a full-time unionized position with a salary starting at $33,000. The position includes excellent health, disability and fringe benefit. Kalamazoo is a college town in southwestern Michigan, located 35 miles east of Lake Michigan, and two hours from Chicago and Detroit.
