Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) is a Legal Services Corporation funded legal services program headquartered in Ann Arbor and serving 13 Michigan counties. LSSCM also administers several statewide programs. LSSCM has openings for legal interns in each of its Ann Arbor-based programs and offices for summer 2012.
Qualifications for all positions: Law students must have at least one year of law school completed by June 2012. It is helpful if applicants have experience working with low-income persons and a commitment to assisting underserved populations. Applicants must be available full-time for 10-11 weeks during the summer and are strongly encouraged to apply for outside funding (e.g. Student Funded Fellowships, Equal Justice America). 1. General legal aid office in Ann Arbor: This office provides civil legal representation to low income persons, with an emphasis on homelessness prevention, domestic violence prevention, and access to needs-based governmental benefits.
Job Description: Law clerks work under the supervision of a staff attorney on all aspects of casework including conducting client interviews, drafting pleadings, legal research, and appearing in court hearings under the Michigan student practice rule. Learn more at www.lsscm.org

2. Family Law Project: A joint program with UM Law School located in Ann Arbor and specializing in representation of survivors of domestic violence primarily in the area of family law including divorce, custody and personal protection order actions.

Michigan Poverty Law Program & Michigan Foreclosure Prevention Project: Joint statewide programs with UM Law School, located in Ann Arbor, and providing research, training, case support, and technology services to all legal services programs in Michigan as well as representation of homeowners facing foreclosure.
Job Description: Legal research and writing, legislative tracking and analysis and some individual case practice in poverty law (housing, public benefits, consumer, foreclosure, elder and family law). Law clerks will also work on MPLP’s new statewide self-represented website project, drafting FAQs and other legal information content in the areas of housing law, family law, and consumer law.
