Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM)

We are a non-profit law firm that proudly delivers free, legal assistance to communities in 17 Southwest Michigan counties with offices in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, Holland, and St. Joseph. We protect rights, challenge injustice, and fight poverty through free legal advocacy for people and families. Our civil legal work involves eviction defense and preventing homelessness, securing independence and safety for survivors of domestic abuse, ensuring that people have the basic income they need to meet the necessities of life, and more. Your Summer Internship with LAWM

Under the supervision of staff attorneys, your responsibilities may include: interviewing clients; performing legal research and writing; advising clients; drafting legal correspondence and pleadings; assisting at hearings; and community education.

Compensation

  • Limited, paid positions: 20-30 hours/week $18/hour for 8 weeks.
  • We will also work with students seeking outside funding (via their law school or other fellowships) and students seeking course credit for their internship.

Qualifications

  • Required: current 1L or 2L at an ABA-accredited law school
  • Preferred: Demonstrated commitment to public interest law or public service
  • Preferred: proficiency or fluency in Spanish
