POSITION: Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) is seeking an outstanding litigator with a demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy to assume a role on our legal team as a Staff Attorney in our Kalamazoo office (or potentially one of our other office locations). The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and developing potential new cases and litigation opportunities related to immigration advocacy and civil rights, conducting impact litigation, and engaging in community advocacy. Advocacy tasks will include outreach, legal research and writing, negotiation, participation in community groups, training legal interns and law clerks, document preparation, policy analysis as well as state and federal litigation and appeals. This is a chance to join a talented team doing incredibly important and challenging work and this position has been added to address the dramatic increase in need for MIRC’s services.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MIRC is a legal resource center for Michigan's immigrant communities. MIRC works to build a thriving Michigan where immigrant communities are fully integrated and respected. MIRC was created by Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP). MAP is a high quality, non-profit law firm that provides free legal services to very low income and senior persons in 13 counties in south central Michigan. MIRC maintains a creative, dedicated staff currently made up of five attorneys, three professional community outreach staff, and numerous student volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Michigan, qualified to be admitted by waiver, or able to take the July 2017 bar exam. Applicants must possess excellent communication, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of immigrants or other persons in poverty. Applicants who have experience, especially related to immigration and poverty, will receive priority. Applicants who are able to communicate effectively in Spanish will receive priority.

BENEFITS: Salary range of $44,000 to $64,000 based on years of relevant experience and excellent health, disability, and fringe benefits.
