POSITION: Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) is seeking an outstanding attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy to assume a role on our legal team as a Staff Attorney for the Detroit metro area. This position is part of a new project designed to increase capacity for direct representation in the Detroit metro area. The goal of the project is to significantly address the needs of low-income individuals with immigration legal issues in the region by providing tailored information, advice, representation, and/or referrals. The successful candidate will be responsible for handling an individual caseload, identifying and developing potential new cases and litigation opportunities related to immigration advocacy and civil rights, and engaging in community advocacy. Advocacy tasks will include outreach, legal research and writing, negotiation, collaborating with community groups, training legal interns and law clerks, document preparation, policy analysis as well as state and federal litigation and appeals. This is a chance to join a talented team doing incredibly important and challenging work. This attorney will work out of our Ann Arbor office.  

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MIRC is a legal resource center for immigrants and immigration advocates across Michigan with offices in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. MIRC’s work includes direct representation, pro bono referrals, impact litigation, training, coalition building, advocacy, technical support, and more. Visit for more information.  

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should be licensed to practice law in Michigan, qualified to be admitted by waiver, or able to take the next Michigan bar exam. Exceptionally qualified May 2018 graduates will be considered. Applicants must possess excellent communication, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of immigrants or other persons in poverty. Applicants who have experience, especially related to immigration and poverty, will receive priority. Applicants who are able to communicate effectively in Spanish will receive priority.  

BENEFITS:  Salary range of $44,000 to $64,000 based on years of relevant experience and excellent health, disability, and fringe benefits.
