POSITION: Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM) has an immediate opening for a staff attorney in its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.  In addition to direct client representation to resolve controversies with the IRS, the attorney will have significant responsibilities for outreach and community education to low income communities, especially those with limited English proficiency, and for collaboration with a network of low income and Senior tax preparation clinics. 

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM:  LAWM provides free legal services to low income persons and Seniors in a wide variety of poverty law areas including consumer, housing, bankruptcy, public benefits and family law. LAWM covers 17 counties in western Michigan from five offices with a full time staff of 52.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Michigan and eligible for admission to Federal Tax Court.  At least one year of prior tax or related clinical experience is required. Applicants must possess both written and oral advocacy skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of persons in poverty.  As this position will involve significant travel throughout the service area, a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.  Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is valued by LAWM.

BENEFITS: This is a full time position, with a salary from $43,000 depending on experience. LAWM offers a generous health benefit and vacation/sick leave package.
