Program: Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM) has a position open for a Staff Attorney in its Kalamazoo office. LAWM is LSC-funded and represents low-income individuals and families in a wide variety of poverty law areas including domestic violence, housing, public benefits and consumer issues. The Kalamazoo office has seven other attorneys and three support staff. Legal Aid of Western Michigan is a regional firm that covers 17 counties, and the Kalamazoo office serves Kalamazoo, Cass, St. Joseph & Van Buren counties.

Qualifications: The ideal candidates will possess:

  • A license to practice law in Michigan or eligible to be admitted by waiver, or scheduled to sit for the July Michigan bar examination,
  • Demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of low-income individuals and households, 
  • excellent written and oral communication skills.

Spanish Language proficiency valued.

Duties: The Staff Attorney is expected to:

  • manage a litigation caseload, including, but not limited to, family law, housing law, consumer law & public benefits cases,
  • successfully manage multiple tasks,
  • build collaborative relationships within the community.

Salary/Benefits: From $47,500 DOE. LAWM offers an excellent fringe benefit package including a retirement plan and a flex benefit account.
