Program: Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM) has a position open for a Staff Attorney in its Kalamazoo office. Legal Aid of Western Michigan is a regional firm that covers 17 counties, and the Kalamazoo office serves Kalamazoo, Cass, St. Joseph & Van Buren counties. LAWM is LSC-funded and represents low-income individuals and families in a wide variety of poverty law areas including domestic violence, housing, public benefits and consumer issues.

Kalamazoo is the home of Western Michigan University, Bell’s Brewery and the Kalamazoo Promise, a college scholarship program for graduates of the Kalamazoo Public Schools. The Kalamazoo office has seven other attorneys and three support staff. The staff is actively engaged in the community and we are a founding partner of one of the first eviction diversion programs in the nation.

Qualifications: The ideal candidates will possess:

  • A license to practice law in Michigan or be eligible to be admitted by waiver or have the ability to become licensed within 5 months;
  • Demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of low-income individuals and households;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Spanish Language proficiency valued.


The Staff Attorney is expected to:

  • Manage a litigation caseload, including, but not limited to, family law, housing law, consumer law & public benefits cases;
  • Successfully manage multiple tasks;
  • Build collaborative relationships within the community.

Salary/Benefits: From $47,500 DOE. LAWM offers an excellent fringe benefit package including a retirement plan and a flex benefit account.
