Lakeshore Legal Aid - Pro Bono Director – Southfield, MI

Organization Overview:

Lakeshore Legal Aid serves low-income people, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in a holistic manner to address clients’ legal issues and improve our communities. Lakeshore provides free direct legal representation in southeast Michigan and the thumb and client intake, advice, and brief legal services throughout Michigan via our attorney-staffed hotline. Our practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law.

Position Overview:

Lakeshore Legal Aid is seeking a Director of Pro Bono to assist in all aspects of the Lakeshore’s pro bono service delivery system. The Director will be responsible for recruiting pro bono attorneys and outreach to community-based agencies that work with our clients. The position will report directly to the Chief Advocacy Officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit pro bono attorneys, large law firms, and other licensed professionals to handle pro bono work and support staff in recruiting pro bono attorneys to handle pro bono cases and assist clients at clinics.
  • Outreach to community-based agencies to facilitate referrals of expungement cases and expungement clinics.
  • Foster connections with community- based agencies that also serve our clients to develop and strengthen relationships and assist in identifying systemic and emerging legal needs of our clients.
  • Develop new opportunities for pro bono attorneys to meet the needs of low-income people in the community.
  • Develop an annual Pro Bono Plan in consultation with LLA management, the client community, private attorneys, and bar associations to involve private attorneys, law students, and other professionals to provide legal services to eligible client.
  • Ensure the Pro Bono office and its work is in compliance with the Legal Services Corporation Act and regulations, the Code of Professional Responsibility, and other contractual requirements of funders.
  • Supervise a team of Lakeshore staff attorney and support staff with the shared goal of maximizing client services.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned by the supervising attorney, a director, CEO, or a CEO designee.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor.
  • Admission to Michigan Bar (or ability to be admitted through reciprocity).
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest or pro bono work.
  • Management experience or experience leading a team.
  • Connections with the Metro Detroit legal community preferred.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, plan, prioritize, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
  • Flexibility.
