Lakeshore Legal Aid is a not-for-profit law firm providing a wide range of free civil legal services to those within the community who are low income and seniors. Lakeshore has an immediate opening in its La Vida Southwest Detroit office for a full-time and part-time, non-attorney immigration advocate.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Help domestic and sexual violence survivors in immigration matters before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. This includes assisting with affidavits, gathering relevant evidence, and providing legal advice in the preparation of VAWA self-petitions and U-visa petitions, among other forms of relief related to victims of domestic or sexual violence.
  • Obtain U visa certifications from law enforcement agencies and maintain a cordial relationship with such agencies.
  • Conduct legal research with regard to immigration matters as needed.
  • Provide crisis intervention and assist clients eliminate practical barriers to safety and self-sufficiency, such as transportation, housing or public benefits.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is required.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and/or experience with immigration law is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest work.
  • Strong writing ability is required.
  • Willingness to seek Department of Justice Accreditation is required.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with qualifications. Full-time position includes excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance/AD&D, short-term and long-term disability, retirement plan, PTO and personal time.
