POSITION: The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC), a division of Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM), is seeking outstanding applicants for an Immigration Attorney position in Kalamazoo.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center is a statewide resource center for advocates seeking equal justice for Michigan’s immigrants. MIRC focuses on technical and co- counsel assistance and training to Michigan legal aid and pro bono attorneys handling immigration and immigrant rights matters, systemic advocacy on behalf of Michigan's low-income immigrants and their families, legislative and legal development tracking and analysis, coalition-building among immigration assistance providers and immigrant advocacy organizations statewide, and support and training for domestic violence survivor attorneys and advocates regarding the rights of battered immigrants. MIRC also provides direct services to clients, focusing on representation of survivors of domestic violence and victims of crimes; citizenship cases; and immigration-related impact representation.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: MIRC seeks an attorney to focus on impact representation. Tasks will include direct client representation in state and federal litigation, case investigation and development, legal research and writing, negotiation, community task force participation, training, document preparation, and policy analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess at least two years of legal experience and must be licensed to practice law in Michigan, qualified to be admitted by waiver, or able to take the next available bar exam. Applicants must possess excellent communication, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of workers, immigrants or other persons in poverty. Spanish proficiency is very strongly preferred.

BENEFITS: This is a full-time contract position for an initial term of one year, with an extension dependent on funding. The salary starts at $42,000 depending on experience. LSSCM offers a “cafeteria plan” fringe benefit package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and disability. Vacation and sick leave are also included.
